Southern Colonial Renovation

Before buying this house, our clients asked us to walk through it and help them assess whether or not a renovation would be viable. After our initial walk and an understanding of their needs, it was clear that a renovation would be a challenge due to the previous additions being completed without much attention to the overall house function. However, after further discussions with the clients to better understand their family and living patterns and through design effort, an imaginative design solution was discovered.

As with many homes that have been renovated and added on over the years, the existing spaces did not relate well to the overall flow and were inadequate for a modern family’s lifestyle. This family with young children enjoys entertaining both inside and outside and creating those spaces and proper relationships were critical. As can be seen in the “before” and “proposed” floor plans, the overall footprint did not need to be expanded so much as repurposed. For example, we took two small and under-utilized bedrooms and were able to create a modern master suite. To accommodate the young children in the family, we added a second floor with their bedrooms and a children’s game room.
